Let there be (Holiday) light(s)!

Having to play host to out-of-town relatives this Holiday season? In-laws descending on your door? Fear not! There are some cool lights shows for you and yours. (I admit that I am a total dork when it comes to light shows. They take me to a happy place.)

The Arboretum’s Moonlight Forest is a large-scale, lantern-art landscape, filled with illuminated animals, dragons, flowers and more. “The magnificent lanterns reflect three themes; Nature, Children’s Garden, and Chinese Culture, all of which embrace the mission and communities of the Arboretum.” Moonlight Forest is up through January 6, 2019 (Arcadia, CA).

Descanso Gardens offers a pretty cool light show with its seasonal Enchanted: Forest of Light. The trees are illuminated with crisp colors that engulf you as you traverse the garden pathways. Magical and moody light-based installations also line your path, with some interactive activations. Up January 6. And you might want to wait – it’s gets pretty nutty busy during the Holidays, and tickets go fast. (La Canada, CA)

And if you want an out-of-town jaunt – there’s Robo Lights in Palm Springs. And this ain’t your traditional Holiday light show, but it’ll certainly make an impression. It’s about an acre’s worth of twisting pathways buzzing lights and kinetic Holiday-ish themed installations, replete with aliens, robots, decorated dolls, bedazzled mannequins and Santas of every stripe. It’s a showstopper, amazing for its sheer magnitude and whacked-out-ness. It’s really a trip. It’s kind of like a life-sized island of lost toys that’s gone a wee off its rocker. You can make a day of it and visit the Palm Springs Museum by day and then rock the Robo Light weirdness at sundown. Totally worth the trip.
